The cork is popped; effervescent rose coloured bubbles gently dance in the frosty glass and aromas of honey and white flowers waft to fill the nose and palate. Then begins the drinking experience of the 2005 Ludwig Leichhardt Reserve Pinot Noir Chardonnay1 - just one of the many top-class wines produced by Jimbour Wines. There are three labels in the award-winning Jimbour Wines suite including the Ludwig Leichhardt Reserve, Jimbour Station and the iconic Jimbour Shiraz. From rich and robust reds such as shiraz, cabernet sauvignon and merlot, to silky smooth chardonnays and crisp verdelhos, each vintage has been expertly crafted by experienced winemaker Peter Scudamore-Smith (Master of Wine).
One of the recent developments has been the shift to single vineyard production at the 20 hectare vineyard on Jimbour Station. Peter explains, “Previously grapes were blended to produce Jimbour wine, now the labels will move to feature only Jimbour produced grapes.
“Our vineyard is really holding its own. The vines are more mature - presenting predictable crops with excellent quality.
“We have also used quite an innovative technique of double pruning our vines, this produced a magnificent reserve shiraz in the 2007 Ludwig Leichhardt range.”
Jimbour Wines can be sampled at the winery’s Cellar Door, located on the grounds of the famous homestead, Jimbour House. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely stroll through the lush gardens surrounding the majestic sandstone home. A recent addition at Jimbour House is the ‘Living History Walk’, featuring an interpretive journey of a bygone era.
It seems that word has spread about the quality wines produced at Jimbour Station, and on a recent visit to Australia, Pope Benedict XVI was treated to the Ludwig Leichhardt Reserve Chardonnay and Reserve Merlot.
