Healthy Meals and Happy Days
When Bernice Waters opens her door to the friendly faces from Meals on Wheels, she is so grateful that her family suggested she give the service a try.
Bernice is a capable elderly woman living independently in her own unit. When she was recovering from an operation about two years ago, she started getting meals delivered and she hasn’t looked back.
“There is such a great range. It’s tasty and very nutritious, and I especially enjoy the desserts,” she smiles.
Five days a week (weekend meals can also be delivered on Fridays) more than 70 clients enjoy delicious meals prepared to national guidelines - including a hot dish and/or salad, soup, juice and dessert for just $6.50 per meal.
Coordinator Mavis Edgar says the best reward is seeing a client’s health improve after they’ve been eating the wholesome meals.
“There are clients who could barely drag themselves out of bed, who I now see walking happily down the street.”
Mavis urges older people not to leave it too late to sign up.
“Many people think they are managing, but it’s easy to say - I won’t bother cooking today. Eating a balanced diet is just so vital for your overall health.”
The service is thankful for the support of its 150 volunteers, but always needs more. And it is so worthwhile. Watching Bernice receive her lunch it’s easy to see that the warmth and companionship between clients and volunteers is just as satisfying as the meal.
