Achieving and Belonging under the Southern Cross | Our Lady of the Southern Cross College (OLSCC)
A melodic tune marks the start of a new day at Our Lady of the Southern Cross College (OLSCC). It is obvious the students are happy to be there and they enjoy the sense of belonging the College community fosters. “My school friends are just another family to me. We all try to look after one another,” one student remarks.
“I really like the way we have good interaction between teachers and students. Everyone knows each other and the new facilities are great too,” another student comments.
While academia has a high priority, holistic education is offered with social, cultural, community, physical and spiritual activities. “In partnership with parents, we are giving our students opportunities to develop as complete human beings, not just brains on legs,” says principal John Hegarty.
“The College focuses on recognising students who are conscientious, not just the high academic achievers. We also acknowledge those who have a high level of achievement across all subjects with our academic excellence awards.”
Complementing academic life, the College encourages and supports achievement in the Arts, music and sporting pursuits. The College’s outdoor education program culminates in a leadership camp at Emu Gully with team building and outdoor skills further fostering a sense of community. Horse sports are held Friday afternoons after school and the annual horse camp is conducted in November.
Students have volunteered selflessly for many events this year including the 40 Hour Famine, Relay for Life, Beyond Blue and ‘In the Pink’ Ball. “Our students are sought after for community events as they are known for their reliability and willingness to give their time,” says John proudly.
New Facilities in 2010
The new airconditioned, vibrantly coloured library utilises the latest information technology and features study nooks and a reading ridge. “We want to encourage reading to boys in particular, with sessions programmed for the senior boys to read to our younger boys,” says John.
The Multi-purpose Centre with sophisticated AV equipment for dynamic presentations to a large audience also caters for netball, volleyball, basketball, badminton and futsal, social events, theatrical and musical performances and assembly space.
The refurbished Home Economics facility is a high quality work environment with modern equipment found in domestic and commercial kitchens as well as computerised sewing machines.
Plans are in progress to establish a new Industrial Technology and Design facility, as well as refurbishing the Visual Art and Science Facilities.
