Live & Learn

“We’re just your everyday family,” shrugs Sharryn MacDougall.
But there’s something special about the MacDougalls – a family centred on values of humility and nurturing.
Sharryn, a kindergarten teacher-aide, has spent many years working with children (including special education), while husband Scott operates a business selling and servicing GPS equipment.
“We really enjoy Dalby’s country living style, the warmth and the networks that we have with friends and the community,” says Sharryn.
There’s good schooling, plenty of sports and fresh air, adds Scott.
“Not a slow place but an enjoyable pace – time to appreciate the children,” says Sharryn.
Laura, 15, has a busy life filled with dance, piano, riding horses, playing netball, cooking and fundraising (receiving the Australia Day Young Citizen of the Year Award in 2008 for her fundraising efforts).
An interest in nature recently saw Laura selected as one of 15 representatives on the Qld Youth Environment Council. Laura thrives on the academic challenges at school (she was dux for her grade last year) and hopes to go on to have a career in rural health where she can help people.
Jonty, 8, originally from Manilla, was adopted four years ago.
“We wanted a big family – but after Laura we somehow lost the recipe,” Sharryn’s eyes well up as she relives the heart-wrenching six year process to become proud parents to their “little man”.
“We call Jonty the ‘pocket rocket’, he’s a bit of a speedster on his legs and has a quick maths mind. He also plays rugby union and piano and likes to ride his pony,” says Sharryn.
Reading is important, TV is limited, and the family enjoys gardening, photography and camping.
“Our goal is to teach the children to be quiet achievers, to be strong in their own minds and be thoughtful, observant and caring.”
