Fast-tracking quality staff
When Peter Hewson’s son Matthew struggled to find a desirable career path after leaving school, entering the family business became the obvious choice.
Matthew is now a senior apprentice at Dalby’s long-standing mechanical repair businesses, Daly and Richards, completing his training through Golden West Employment Solutions.
After just two years of study Matthew has achieved third year qualifications as an automotive technician and is developing a solid understanding of business relations as well as aspects of business management.
With the support of Golden West, hard work and dedication to the job, Matthew has been able to fast-track his four year apprenticeship by 12 months.
Peter says although the business has managed apprentices in the past, the decision to operate through Golden West has meant less bookwork and more time spent teaching the trade.
“Golden West has taken the hassle out of managing apprenticeships. I no longer worry about superannuation, holiday pay or worker’s compensation everything is just worked out for me.
“When you operate a small business you don’t always have the time or the staff to complete the extra paper work and it’s great to be able to rely on Golden West to do all that.”
Peter bought the business in 1981 and says Matthew’s apprenticeship is a step towards succession planning. Daly and Richards is also providing a potential career path for first year apprentice Michael Jerram who is completing his qualifications through Golden West.
Golden West Training and Employment is a community-based, not-for-profit organisation experienced in placing apprentices and trainees of all ages and securing quality staff for local businesses.
