Children with a disability receive Waminda’s attention
Waminda Services has been ‘Opening Doors and Creating Futures’ for adults for some 30 years. Today, Waminda Services is offering a new and exciting program for children with a disability and in particular specialised support for the Autistic Spectrum Disorder range - Autism, Asperger’s Sydnrome and PDD-NOS.
“Our aim is to create an environment that brings children together to feel safe and understood. To be whole people – happy and confident within their abilities and be able to participate in life successfully,” says group leader Helen Taylor.
The program assists in behavioural and social development, with a focus on the development of life skills; cooking, crafts, art, gardening and music.
“Each week we focus on the development of a particular skill, gross or fine motor, perceptual or sensory,” advises coordinator Judy Chapman.
Another aspect of the program is to provide children/young people with coping strategies for home and school.
Waminda is a not for profit organisation and offer this program free of charge to parents and carers. The program runs four days a week, Monday to Thursday from 3.30pm to 5.30pm.
“We will grow to meet demand, there are already plans to extend the program to children three years and older from 9am to 5pm,” offers Judy.
“Programs like ours offer valuable respite and support to parents, carers and siblings,” adds Helen.
