Turn your life around with DISCO

Are you looking for direction?  Have you left school and but are struggling to find a secure job?  Would you like a career not just casual work? There is an answer.

Many young Dalby locals have turned their lives around – going from unemployed and unsure about their futures, to discovering new skills, confidence and a career path thanks to free programs at DISCO (Downs Industry School’s Co-Op).

DISCO’s ‘Get set for Work’ and ‘Youth Employment Support’ (YES) programs, funded by the Queensland Government, offer young people practical support and training to help them find their feet in the workforce.

‘Get Set for Work’ helps 15-17 year olds who have left school before finishing year 12 to learn about budgeting, resumes, interviews and personal presentation.  Participants can obtain a blue card, first aid certificate, and Certificate I qualification.

DISCO’s Wendy Ambrose said participants do all kinds of practical training – depending on the needs of the group.

“We’ve done everything from motor mechanics to wood work. There’s even a camp for participants to have a break away, learn more about themselves and teamwork.”

DISCO also offers the YES program for 17-24 year olds who are experiencing difficulties finding work. YES provides individual career advice, training, and job placement tailored to the individual.

But what is perhaps the most impressive part about the programs, is the genuine dedication of the DISCO team – for them it’s so much more than a job – it’s a passion.

“We’ll do whatever it takes to help young people find employment, keep them motivated and be a listening ear when they need it,” Wendy said.

So if you or someone you know is looking for direction, put them in touch with DISCO.  There’s really nothing to lose.
