Relay Brings Hope

As I placed my candle lantern along the edge of the track, while listening to words of inspiration, I couldn’t help but feel a wave of comfort, as though the community spirit had embraced each of us. The candles glimmered along the track. We all knew why we were there. Too many candles. And yet their glow brought light and gave us hope. Participant 2010 Dalby Relay For Life.

Lighting a candle in memory of a loved one is one of the most moving moments of the Cancer Council Queensland Relay For Life.
This September will mark the fifth year Dalby will host this unique event where teams challenge themselves in an overnight walk.
Cancer survivor and one of the organisers Meg Doyle says the Relay For Life is an opportunity to celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost and fight back against cancer.

“To see hundreds of people from our community sharing an evening together, in fun and support, is really something.  Words can’t describe what it feels like to be a part of the event.”

People of all ages and backgrounds walk side by side united in the quest to help make a difference by raising funds for research, prevention, education and support services. All teams fundraise during the months leading up to the event to reach their own targets.
While there are certainly quiet times for reflection and prayer during the Relay, Meg says it’s not a somber occasion.

“Actually there’s quite a party atmosphere through the night with live entertainment, even fitness routines and dancing.  Many people get really into the whole thing and do the walk in fancy dress.”
