Teeing off for dalby
A strong work ethic, a passion for sport, a good sense of humour and devotion to the community are just some of the characteristics that make Brian Hedge, proprietor of Hedge’s Sports Store, a local living legend.
Brian has operated Hedge’s Sports Store alongside wife Shirley since 1974.   Brian’s longevity in business can be attributed to his motto “work hard and keep busy” as well as, his unwavering sentiment that “family is very important”.
He recounts that all of their five children have worked in the store.  Currently Brian’s son Bruce and daughter-in-law Kylie are partners in the business.
It was during a short stint as a butcher that Brian lost his right hand, a setback that did little to hinder his ability to play both golf and squash competitively.  He has done so for many years with the aid of a self-designed prosthetic.
Brian has always maintained that “good sporting facilities make a town”.  After purchasing the Dalby Squash Courts he rallied to build two additional courts adding to the three already in existence.
This commitment to developing high-quality sporting infrastructure came to fruition whilst he served as Alderman for Dalby Town Council.  He played a pivotal role in fundraising for the Dalby Community Centre - now the PCYC.
During 18 years of service as Alderman, Brian chaired the National Fitness Council. He also served one term as Deputy Mayor.
Over the years, Brian has sponsored many of Dalby’s sporting clubs and is adamant that sport contributes to a strong sense of community. A notion he has certainly embodied as proud recipient of the Australian Sports Medal in 2000 for his contribution to the sport of squash.
