A Powerful Capacity to Perform - Ostwald Bros Dalby

Civil construction and engineering company Ostwald Bros turns 21 this year and there’s no doubt the company has come of age.
Starting out as a one-man outfit in 1990, Ostwald Bros has grown to meet the demands of an expanding resource sector and now employs over 500 staff, most of them locals.
The company’s decision to make Dalby its base has paid off as it proves itself a worthy local option for big business.
Built on family values, a commitment to safety and a belief in the power of successful partnerships, Ostwald Bros is now the contractor of choice for major resource industry players with contracts throughout much of Queensland.
But amid the major projects, Ostwald Bros continues to focus on servicing all regional communities and is just as keen to tackle small-scale domestic projects.
Dalby was originally chosen as headquarters when the company’s bread and butter was cotton irrigation work.  Later, as the Surat Basin began to open up resource opportunities, Ostwald Bros began to diversify its services and now incorporates a range of business entities.
While bulk earthmoving and civil construction remains the company’s central business, Ostwald Bros’ services now include mining support, transport, construction materials and water treatment.
The company’s success is guided by its founder Brendan Ostwald, the eldest of the four Ostwald sons who began operations with just a single scraper. Over time the Ostwald Bros entity has expanded with the added capabilities of Howard (Brendan’s father) and brothers Matthew, Dan and Brian Ostwald who bring considerable talent and strength to the operations.
Although the company’s projects are now spread across much of Queensland and interstate, many members of the Ostwald family call Dalby home. The close proximity of Ostwald Bros to its main project sites means that the majority of workers also go home to their families at night avoiding the ‘fly-in, fly-out’ scenario that plagues many regional mining communities.
Indeed it is Ostwald Bros' commitment to the betterment of the region that has proved one of its major strengths. Years of successful partnering with business and community has resulted in major construction contracts such as the $60 million dollar liquefied natural gas contract with BG Group’s Australian subsidiary QGC that is utilising Ostwald Bros’ extensive fleet of earthmoving equipment.
With its proven ability to meet the demands of a changing business environment, a reputation for quality and an expanding client list, the true strength of Ostwald Bros may yet to be realised.

Train to retain
As the size and complexity of Ostwald Bros’ projects increases, the value of effective staff training becomes ever more apparent.
Zero harm, quality assurance and skill development are essential to the continued progress of the company. With the support of a full-time training and development manager, staff are given additional training and assessments to ensure safe, high quality performance.
Offering career pathway opportunities and employing locally are high on the company’s agenda. This year Ostwald Bros will host six students from the Dalby Resource and Fabrication Training (DRAFT) Program through Dalby State High School as well as offering school-based apprenticeships for students at Dalby State High School and Our Lady of the Southern Cross College.
Students will be placed in administration and workshop positions while apprentices will work in the company’s modern maintenance facility maintaining its extensive machinery and transport fleets.
Ostwald Bros’ goal is self-reliance, and its recruitment, induction and training is based on regional sustainability, working closely with training organisations and other industry bodies to support the skilling of its people.

Transport, plant and equipment
From a single CAT 613B scraper, Ostwald Bros has grown to include an extensive fleet of plant, equipment and heavy haulage vehicles which deliver essential support to its construction services.
Ostwald Bros’ commitment to powerful performance is underpinned by its ability to quickly supply all the necessary plant, equipment and construction materials to project sites.
With one of Australia’s largest scraper fleets and another nine new machines added to the fleet in recent months, it has a wide capacity of earthmoving equipment deployed to its construction projects.
It also operates a heavy haulage transport fleet that provides cost-effective load and delivers contract solutions to customers Australia-wide.The fleet comprises late model Kenworth prime movers and float combinations with carrying capacities from 24t to 90t.
A purpose-built workshop in Dalby and mobile facilities staffed by experienced teams provide ongoing maintenance and repair to NHVAS standards ensuring reliability of the company’s full fleet.

Construction materials
With the resource sector boom came significant growth. Ostwald Bros soon launched its concrete and quarries division to support projects and supply direct to customers.
Ostwald Bros purchased its first concrete plant in Dalby followed by a second plant in Kingaroy. Now a third plant is planned for Chinchilla.
Mobile concrete plants supply direct to project sites and offer the same level of service as fixed sites.
A large fleet of agitator trucks with a range of carrying capacities from 0.4 to 8.4 cubic metres ensures prompt delivery to customers throughout the region.
A variety of concrete mixes are available for industrial and domestic use including coloured concrete and exposed aggregates.
The company’s Darling Downs quarry produces all the required pavement materials supporting civil projects and domestic applications.
A competent team with many years’ experience in construction and engineering provide technical knowledge of all construction materials.
