During 1978 Tidy Towns competition the judge must have been a little disappointed at how Dalby presented itself for judging. After being driven around the town to see whatever he wanted to look at, he apparently came back to the council chambers and started writing his report. It must not have read very well because it was not long after that judging day that a meeting was called for interested people to start a tidier towns group.

By the start of 1979 the “Dalby Beautification Association” was formed. The late Mr Clive Drew was the person responsible for the formation of the group. At that time money was raised by donations for the running of the event. The Apex Club community service fund gave a donation of $30, the Rotary Club gave a donation of $50, and a nursery gave a donation of $50 and the rest was raised by membership fees. For the 1980 event Dalby Town Council gave a $200 donation and has been a very good supporter of the event ever since.

At the Australia Day awards in 2005, The Dalby Beautification Association was awarded the “community Event of the Year” award. In time for the 2007 event, the town council gave the beautification committee $3000 worth of monetary support and the in-kind support has a very high value as well. Over the years their has been all kinds of trials and tribulations which had to be overcome by the enthusiastic committee members.

After many applications for financial assistance, this year the organizing committee received some government assistance for funding the promotion of the event. So now we have all sorts of branding for fancy letterheads, business cards and even a web site. We are also chartering several coaches to bring tourists to view our competition gardens. Normally there are about six gardens open for public viewing.
